Hatha yoga generally refers to a set of physical exercises (known as ‘asanas’ or postures), designed to align your muscles and bones. A Hatha yoga class is generally performed at a slower pace, making it ideal for beginners or anyone who really wants to focus on the individual poses. As well as strengthening and improving flexibility, it also helps to reduce stress in the body and mind. The postures are also designed to open the many channels of the body, especially the spine, so that energy can flow freely.
Hatha is also translated as ‘ha’ meaning ‘sun’ and ‘tha’ meaning ‘moon’. This refers to the balance of masculine elements (active, hot, sun) and feminine elements (receptive, cool, moon) within all of us. Hatha yoga is seen as a path towards creating balance. In our physical bodies we can develop a balance of strength and flexibility. With the use of the breath, the yoga poses help still any ‘constant talking’ of the mind and become more present in the moment.
